I like this building. It is the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, converted from an old flour mill on the banks of the Tyne in Gateshead. However, like other art deco industrial buildings converted into modern art galleries, I find myself preferring the architecture of the building to its contents.

I haven’t really done many of these fake model shots (aka tilt-shift) before, but as I was up the BT Tower with a great view down over London, I couldn’t resist having a go at one. This is a view along New Cavendish street at the junction with Portland Place.

I was lucky enough to get a chance to go up the BT Tower today, having won tickets for my wife and myself in the Open House London ballot.

I’ve wanted to go up the tower for years and I wasn’t disappointed by the experience. After being hurried through security and handed individual name badges, the speedy lift whisked us to the revolving viewing gallery in less than 20 seconds. We were greeted with complimentary coffee and cupcakes to enjoy whilst taking in the views, which were absolutely fantastic! Above is a six-shot panorama, with the glass roof the British Museum’s great court in the foreground. The Shard – nearly at its full height – dominates the sky line to the right, whilst the sky scrapers of the City and Canary Wharf fill the left.

From the top, we were able to see so many other landmarks as well – the Olympic Park, Battersea Power station, the Palace of Westminster, Windsor Castle and Wembley, to name a few.

Each rotation of the viewing platform takes 22 minutes and we were allowed to stay for about two laps before having to descend. On our way out, there were several historical artefacts on display, such as the commemorative opening plaque, and various articles from when the tower was built. Some knowledgable BT staff were also on hand to answer questions. Finally, we were then presented with a momento – a certificate in the form of a panoramic print and an information booklet, presented in a branded poster tube. Clutching these goodies, we left with smiles on our faces. A great event and well organised by BT and the Open House teams.

A photo of the Barri Gòtic – the Gothic Quarter – which I took during a crossing on the Transbordador Aeri del Port. You can see La Rambla, the tree-lined street winding its way down from Plaça de Catalunya to the harbour. A statue of Christopher Columbus – Monument a Colom – sits in the middle of Plaça de la Carbonera, as a reminder that Barcelona was where he arrived upon his return from his discovery voyage to the Americas. The statue is said to be modeled on Nelson’s column and even has four lions around its base.
Also visible in this shot are Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia (in the top right quadrant) and Basílica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família (in the very top-right), both with cranes all around them.

The Font de Les Oques (Well of the Geese) is the cloister of Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia. This photo doesn’t show them, but there are thirteen white geese that live here, representative of the number of years that Santa Eulàlia – the co-patron saint of Barcelona – lived before being martyred.

Formerly known as the Estadi Olímpic de Montjuïc, the stadium was renamed in 2001 in honour of the former president of Catalunya, Lluís Companys. It was originally built in 1929 and was part of the unsuccessful 1936 Olympics bid. However, when Barcelona was awarded the 1992 Olympics, the stadium was extensively renovated.

Maybe I’m a bit of a Philistine, but I quite often find myself being more impressed by the architecture of art museums than their contents.

This a shot of the inside of the main dome of the Palau Nacional, taken by leaving my camera on the floor with the self-timer.

The Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, housed in the Palau Nacional, was built for the 1929 World’s Fair. Unfortunately, when we were visiting the esteemed Romanesque gallery was closed for maintenance, which was a shame. This is a shot from one of the Gothic art galleries.

The Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia is Barcelona’s main cathedral, although it is perhaps a bit overshadowed by La Sagrada Família. No shortage of tourists here as well though…

The Castell de Montjuïc, built in the 17th century, more recently served as a military museum until 2007. Subsequently, ownership was passed to the Barcelona city council who are currently converting the extensive site for a number of cultural uses. As there is not a lot to see apart from the battlements and the stunning views over Barcelona and its port, it is currently free to enter. It also provides a great excuse to take another cable car up to the top of Montjuïc.

This is a view of Port Vell, taken from the Torre Sant Sebastià of the Transbordador Aeri del Port. The eight minute trip from here to the Miramar station was one of my favourite moments of our trip.
